A LOOK AT HANCOCK

July 8th 2008 11:51
Drunk & Disorderly

This shoulda been great. What it turns out to be is an exercise in massive plot holes and ricocheting story lines which spiral out of control.
And the biggest pity of all is that the first half of the film is great. Will Smith sizzles as anti-hero Hancock - a drunk and disorderly superhero who while catching the bad guys tends to leave a multi-million dollar trail of destruction in his path.

He's completely unlikeable, even going as far as threatening an old lady with physical violence. It's a credit to Smith who's usually cinemas most likeable actor.
His life changes when he saves the life of PR guy Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman who's also great) who is in the process of trying to change the world. Ray takes it upon himself to give Hancock an image and personality makeover. And this is when the film hits its spots. Smith is well believable as the guy who starts to show he has a soft side and does care what people think of him. Bateman is equally good as the guy trying to drag the goodness out of him. The scenes between the two are the films best.
It's only when Charlize Theron goes from being Rays caring wife to something else completely that the film starts to unravel. And this is not Therons fault. In fact she's as good as the two male leads.
The problem lies with the script writers. It just seems that they suddenly panicked and thought they better start using the special effects department more or no-one will come and watch. We go from really origional for the first hour to really gone for the last 45 mins.

They should have shown some restraint and maybe waited for a possible sequel to unleash the mayhem. In saying that I liked a lot more about this film than I hated. It would be great to give Smith another crack at this guy because it's some of the best work he's done.
And if they can't mend the damage with a sequel..............then leave it at that.
If only, if only.
